What it includes
The festival is dedicated to the composer Schubert, and features a number of performances of his music over several days and locations. See some of the world’s best musicians perform some of Schubert’s rarer compositions. It is well-known for covering music that is not commonly played: in other words, songs which perhaps are not regarded as Schubert’s “pop hits”. Other compositions from the Romantic period are also played.
Every summer the festival draws over 40 000 Schubert fans to the small town in Austria, where they may enjoy around 80 different events. While it was historically held in Schwarzenberg alone, now the events are spread between Schwarzenberg and Hohenems.
The Schubertiade has featured performances from some of the world’s best singer, accompanist and chamber music ensambles, boasting the likes of Angelika Kirchlager, Alfred Brendel, Robert Holl, Thomas Quasthoff, Michael Schade and the Emerson String Quartet.
The beauty of Schwarzenberg itself makes the visit worthwhile, whether you’re a die-hard classical music fan or not. The village centre is as Austrian as it gets, with clapboard houses nestled in scenery of rolling hills and the Bregenz Forest.
Working Holiday Maker Tip:
If you’re willing to stay on into early September, you’ll get to see the Alptag, in which many cows and horses are beautifully decorated with garlands, to be led from the Alps back to the village. The parade is not to be missed, as many of the locals don traditional dress and feast in celebration of the warmer weather.
