Working in Valletta Malta
The capital of Malta, Valletta is located in the central area of the island and has a population of just 7000 in its historical centre. Valletta features many buildings dating back 400-500 years and is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Modern day Valletta has maintained much of its historical roots with an ancient skyline and many significant churches in excellent condition. The city experiences a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers averaging about 30 °C and mild, wet winters when temperatures drop to a 15 °C median.

Airport
Malta International Airport
Located on the south-east region of Malta, the country’s primary airport is located at Luqa. The complex is an international facility that services about 70 destinations around the world. The best way to reach Malta International Airport is through the Gozo Airport shuttle bus service, which connects travellers to several parts of the island. For those locations that can’t be reached by the shuttle, taxis will need to be used.
Railway Station
Valletta Station
There is only one railway line in Malta, which connects from Valletta Station to Mdina. However, it is no longer operational. The single-track line was used between 1883 and 1931. A museum now exists at the old Valletta Station site and can be visited by the public.
Transportation
Valletta is small in size and easily navigated by foot. This is the best way to take in the historical elements of the city and properly appreciate the ancient buildings and churches. There are also two bus routes that circle the city for visitors looking to quickly move around Valletta.

Insurance and Healthcare
In recent years the World Health Organisation (WHO) has ranked Malta near the top of the world in terms of health care. Treatment from doctors and hospital is available to all expats in Malta who have registered with the country’s health care scheme.
On top of the available health facilities, expats in Malta can take out private care, with a small range of services available for those willing to pay extra. Costs for private health treatment in Malta compare well to those in Australia.
Despite a high standard of health facilities in Malta, DFAT recommends all Australians travelling to the country take out comprehensive travel insurance to cover any overseas costs.
