Belgium is a very diverse country that is home to about 11 million people and borders France, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

Despite this diversity, Belgium has a strong uniform culture that has impacted Europe and the world. The country is well known to tourists for its beer, chocolate and waffles.
Belgium is a founding member of the European Union, with the EU’s headquarters being based in the country’s headquarters, Brussels.
The Working Holiday program between Australia and Belgium was setup to encourage cultural exchange and closer ties between the two countries by allowing young people to have an extended holiday funded by short-term employment.
Under the arrangement, Australians aged between 18 and 30 are allowed to travel to Belgium for a working holiday for up to 12 months.

Tax system
Belgium is recognised as having some of the highest tax rates in the world, for locals and expats, with some individuals paying close to 60% of their earnings in tax (including social security).
Taxation in Belgium is dependent on whether you are a resident or non-resident, for tax purposes. With tax payable on income from domestic and international sources, individuals will pay on a sliding scale dependent on how much is earned.
In 2012, the basic tax exemption rate was €6570 regardless if you were single or married. Tax rates rise from this point until they reach a peak of 50% for incomes above €35,000. Belgium’s tax year is the same as the calendar year.
Bank Account
Opening a bank account as an expat in Belgium requires several pieces of documentation, including: passport, a completed bank account application form and proof of address in Belgium. Each bank account will usually include a debit card, overdraft facility, option to open a savings account and more. To save time, check online for banks that allow expats to open an account without even entering a branch.
The major banks in Belgium include: BNP Paribas Fortis, Dexia and ING. Many foreign banks can also be located in Belgium.
A possibly cheaper option is to open a bank account through the Belgian Post Office, which offers many of the same services as the country’s banks.
Working in Belgium
As Brussels is the home of the EU’s headquarters, the country is a haven for expats from throughout Europe and the world. Belgium has a wide range of industries that expats can explore for employment. However, be aware that the country’s economy, like much of Europe, has been hit hard in recent years and job openings have been low. Job hunters in Belgium would also be well served if they have language skills in French or Flemish.
Teaching English is an excellent option for expats in Belgium on a working holiday. According to TEFL (Teaching English as a foreign language), there is a high demand for English tuition in Belgium due to it being a base for the EU, and for business and tourism purposes.
For people looking for work in Belgium, the most typical places to find employment include in print media, through online job websites or through recruitment agencies.
Communication
Belgium is well serviced by telecommunications and has three licensed mobile network operators. The major telecommunications players in Belgium are:
Proximus
Mobistar
