Population: 1.351 billion (2012)

Currency: Renminbi (yuan)

Language: Standard Mandarin

China, officially the People’s Republic of China, is a sovereign state located in East Asia. It is the world’s most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The PRC is a single-party state governed by the Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing. It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Chongqing), and two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau). The PRC also claims Taiwan – which is controlled by the Republic of China (ROC), a separate political entity – as its 23rd province, a claim controversial due to the complex political status of Taiwan and the unresolved Chinese Civil War.

Tax System

Hong Kong is well known for its attractive tax regime, at a personal and corporate level. Expats working in Hong Kong can take advantage of the some of the most inviting tax brackets in the world. The city also has no capital gains tax, no VAT sales tax, no withholding tax on dividends and interest or collection of social security benefits.

Individuals are taxed at progressive rates on their income, starting at just 2% and only reaching 17% for the higher income earners.

The income tax brackets of Hong Kong are as follows:

Income (HKD) Tax rate
1-40,000 HKD 2%
40,001-80,000 HKD 7%
80,001-120,000 HKD 12%
Above 120,000 HKD 17%

Hong Kong is well known for its expat population, particularly in the country’s banking and financial section where an abundance of foreign companies operate. People with a background in economics and finance would find opportunities in Hong Kong to further their career while on a working holiday. Due to Hong Kong’s attractive tax system expats from around the globe look to the financial centre for employment.

English teaching opportunities are also commonly available in Hong Kong, as it is one of the primary languages used for business and key to the city’s tourism industry. According to TEFL (Teaching English as a foreign language), there is a demand for English tuition in Hong Kong, but qualifications will be required for this work.
