What to pack

Packing is actually tougher than you might first imagine. The key is balancing being practical with taking just enough – over packing is a common mistake. Remember you will most likely accumlate clothing and other items along the way of your journey.

Consider also what the country’s season will be when you land there. Cater for that particular season plus pack a small selection of clothes for an alternate season. You can always buy extra required clothing at your destination.

Key items to pack for a working holiday traveller :

  1. International power adaptor/s
  2. Various types of footwear – close caped shoes, running shoes and sandals / flip flops. Work appropriate shoes (office, retail, front of house)
  3. Basic medical kit  including tweezers and scissors (please note that this cannot be packed in hand-luggage o planes)
  4. A warm jumper
  5. Overcoat or jacket
  6. Sewing kit and spare shoe laces
  7. A suit or business clothes – clothing suitable for job interviews (button up shirts are always acceptable with a trousers). A tie and a V-neck jumper are good alternatives to packing a full suit. Remember – think neat and tidy and well presented.
  8. Thermals for cold climate locations
  9. Gloves and scarf
  10. 2 pairs of jeans – one ‘good’ pair and the other ‘rough and ready’ pair (good for outdoor work)
  11. Sun hat and a beanie
  12. Smart phone
  13. Laptop or tablet
  14. Bathers
  15. Make copies of important documentation and registering with your embassy prior to leaving?
