Indonesia is a South-East Asian country that shares a border with Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and East Timor. The country is made up of more than 17,500 islands, has 34 provinces and a population of more than 238 million people.

Formerly part of the Dutch empire, Indonesia declared its independence following World War II in 1945.

Today, the country has one of the world’s fastest growing economies and is part of the G-20 and Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN). It is a vastly diverse country that represents several different cultures, with the main ethnic groups being Javanese and Sudanese.

The Work and Holiday visa arrangement between Australia and Indonesia allows holiday and travel between the two countries for Australians.

Under the arrangement, university-educated Australians aged between 18 and 30 are allowed to work and holiday in Indonesia for up to 12 months.

The arrangement was introduced with the aim of strengthening cultural exchange and widening economic ties and links between the two countries.

Tax system

Taxation in Indonesia strongly supports its large contingent of poorer citizens with low rates of 0% to 5% catering for this section of the population. Tax is paid on a progressive scale in the South-East Asian country. Expats must pay tax on income earned in the country and will be required to submit a tax return.

Indonesia’s tax rates are as follows:

Taxable income (rupiah) Rate
Up to 24 million 0%
1-50 million 5%
50-250 million 15%
250-500 million 25%
500 million + 30%

Bank Account

Opening a bank account as an expat in Indonesia requires several pieces of documentation, including: passport, proof of residence and proof of employment. Each bank account will usually include a debit card and option to open a savings account.

The major banks in Indonesia include: Bank Mandiri, Bank BCA and Bank BNI. Several foreign banks also operate in Indonesia, such as ANZ and HSBC.

Working in Indonesia

Indonesia is an emerging economic power and the largest in South-East Asia. With an abundance of natural resources, major industries in Indonesia include petroleum, natural gas and mining. Tourism is also a major industry in Indonesia where expats would find employment opportunities, especially in Bali.

Teaching English is another option for expats in Indonesia on a working holiday. According to TEFL (Teaching English as a foreign language), there is a high demand for English tuition in Indonesia as the language is commonly used for business and tourism purposes.
