About
Falls Festival began in 1993 in Lorne, and features up-and-coming Australian performers as well as alternative international acts. It is a must-see for anyone interested in independent artists and alternative culture. It draws intriguing crowds and the people watching is one of the many highlights. It is now held in a number of sites: Lorne, Marion Bay, and Yelgun (near Byron Bay). Camping is free at the festival itself, or you can book accommodation nearby.
Past lineups have featured acts such as Tame Impala, Iggy Pop, Bloc Party, The Dandy Warhols, alt-J, Franz Ferdinand, John Butler Trio, The Flaming Lips, Silverchair, and many more. As well as the excellent music, Falls Festival features many whimsical art installations, ethical food and drink stalls, and even some good vintage clothes shopping.
We suggest going to Byron Bay for Falls Festival, as this beautiful seaside town is famous across Australia for its surfing, food, alternative culture and natural beauty. It’s the perfect place to spend the Australian summer.
Working Holiday Maker Tip:
Volunteering at music festivals is popular in Australia to dodge the steep ticket price. You will work some shifts during the festival, and have the rest of the time to explore and party. You can apply to volunteer at Falls here: http://byron.fallsfestival.com.au/volunteer-application/

Falls Festival is held at the North Byron Parklands, Byron Bay, NSW Australia.
Where to stay
Though camping at the festival site itself is free, it can be nice to have somewhere to escape to when you need a rest. There are many cheap accommodation options in Byron Bay, including caravan parks, backpackers in the centre of town, and self-contained bungalows ideal for large groups. During Falls Festival a shuttle takes groups from town to the festival site for free.
Working Holiday Maker Tip:
Take a daytrip out of Byron Bay on “The Happy Coach” for about $25 AUD, to visit the hippy town of Nimbin. Famous as a hub of new-age philosophy, sustainability, and general hippydom, it is also the home of the annual “MardiGrass” festival. Not only will you get to explore this unusual and historic town, but the bus also takes you through the beautiful subtropical forests of the area, visiting other small towns and waterfalls along the way.
