Working in Austria

Capital: Vienna

Largest city: Vienna

Population: 8.46 million (2012)

Currency: Euro (EUR / €)

Language: German and Austro-Bavarian

Austria is a European country in the alpine region of central Europe. The country borders a number of other European nations including Switzerland, Germany, Liechtenstein, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Italy and Slovenia. Along with Switzerland, Austria is considered one of the preeminent places for winter sports in Europe; especially skiing and snowboarding.

Austria is not just about winter sports, however, as the majestic Alps offer an abundance of things to see and do right throughout the year. In the warmer months, visitors can take in historic cities, breathtaking vistas, rigorous hiking and, for the most adventurous, some of the world’s best climbing and alpine mountaineering.

As a country that shares its borders with nine other European nations, Austria has a unique culture and tone. Austrians are a calm friendly people as whole and like to define themselves by what they are not – as much as by what they are. For example, Austrians are most definitely not German; despite sharing a common language.

As a destination for working holidaymakers, Austria is very attractive in the winter months as working in a ski resort (www.skiingaustria.co.uk) is what many travellers desire. If you are not a citizen of a EU or EFTA member state or of New Zealand, then getting permission to live and work in Austria can be difficult however, there are also seasonal worker permits available.

Even without permission to work, Austria is a great traveller’s destination and one that should absolutely be on your list if you are having a working holiday anywhere in Europe.

Tax System

People who are resident in Austria are taxed on income from a variety of sources including employment, capital assets and leases. Tax rates are progressive and assessed in relation to income earned within a tax year. In Austria, the tax year coincides with the calendar year and the tax rates vary from 0% through to 50% depending on income.

Income is deducted from employees’ wages, as are social insurance contributions. Tax withheld is treated as pre-payment on annual tax due and the amount due is reconciled against the amount paid during the tax assessment process.

There are a number of expenses that can be offset against income and this can reduce the overall tax liability. Each year, a wage earner must submit a tax declaration after which the tax assessment is carried out. In many instance part of the tax paid may be refunded.

The following social insurance contributions are deducted from wage payments in Austria:

Sickness insurance – 7.65%

Accident insurance – 1.4%

Unemployment insurance – 6%

Pension insurance 18.5% – 22.8%

Austria does have agreements with a number of other countries to ensure that people avoid double-taxation.
