Melbourne Food and Wine Festival
Country: Melbourne, Australia
When: 3rd – 12th March 2017
Cost: Each festival event is priced differently, so you will need to check the official website for specifics.
History
Melbourne is renowned for its small bar scene and its gourmet international food, which arose as a result of its multicultural history. Migrants from all over the world came to call Melbourne home, bringing with them tastes from around the globe.
Beginning in 1993 as a fairly small culinary event, the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival has now grown into something of gastronomical proportions, with over 250, 000 visitors attending the festival each year.. In seventeen days, over 200 events are held throughout the many laneways, basements and rooftops of Melbourne’s CBD, and the festival has even spread across regional Victoria.

Key Highlights
Events for 2016 are yet to be released, but keep your eye on the official website as more information comes out closer to the date.
Past festivals have included pop-up kitchens, famous chefs, food vans, food tours of the city, live music, and plenty of cooking classes and demonstrations.
How to get there
It should be easy to get a flight direct to Tullamarine Airport no matter where you’re coming from. The airport shuttle is $36 AUD return, but it does include a free hotel shuttle, to take you to your hotel once you arrive in the city centre.
If you’re travelling within Australia, there’s also the option of taking a Greyhound bus, which, though much cheaper than flying, can take a long while. Book a ride overnight to save on accommodation.
The festival’s events are spread throughout the CBD and are easily accessible by foot or on the tram. The “City Circle Tram” is free, but as this is limited you can get a Myki card, used for tram travel, from any 7/11. Some would argue that the best of Melbourne is in its fringe suburbs: Fitzroy, Carlton, Brunswick, and Prahran are all places worth visiting, particularly for the restaurants and also shopping.
Where to Stay
For a cheap hotel in the CBD you’re looking at around $150 AUD per night.
