Denmark is a Northern European country located south of Sweden and Norway, and to the north of Germany. The country is made up of more than 400 islands that are home to about 5.6 million people.
A sovereign state, Denmark consists of a constitutional monarchy and it became part of the European Union in 1973.
Denmark is well known as the historical home of the Vikings, which controlled many parts of Northern Europe between the 8th and 10th century.
Today, Denmark is a modern country with a strong economy. The country has a high GDP, is well educated and has one of the world’s highest minimum wages.
The Working Holiday program between Australia and Denmark was setup to encourage cultural exchange and closer ties between the two countries by allowing young people to have an extended holiday funded by short-term employment.
Under the arrangement, Australians aged between 18 and 30 are allowed to travel to Denmark for a working holiday for up to 12 months.

Tax System
Denmark’s tax year is the same as the calendar year. As an expat, if you have spent six consecutive months in Denmark then you will be liable to pay full taxes. This includes full liability to pay tax on all income, including assets and income from another country, interests, dividends, rental income and fringe benefits.
Income tax in Denmark is made up of four components: national tax, municipal tax, health contribution, and church tax (paid by members of the Danish National Evangelical Lutheran Church). Taxes in Denmark are noted as being very high, with the highest bracket currently 51.7%.
Bank Account
To open a bank account in Denmark as an expat, all banks will ask for your civil registration number (CPR-nummer). Other information that will need to be provided include: passport or identification card and a document proving address in Denmark. Depending on the bank, applicants may also be asked for proof of employment.
The major banks in Denmark include: Arbejdernes Landsbank, Danske Bank, Jyske Bank and Nordea. Once all documentation is provided, a bank account in Denmark is often opened immediately.
Working in Denmark
Denmark has a wide range of prospering industries where jobs could be available for expats on a working holiday in the country. Many multi-national companies operate in Denmark, with the country’s main export markets being industrial manufacturing and agriculture. However, be aware that the country does have high tax rates compared to most western countries. Danish language skills would also be a massive advantage for job hunters in the county.
Teaching English is an excellent option for expats in Denmark on a working holiday. According to TEFL (Teaching English as a foreign language), there is a demand for English tuition in Denmark due to its proximity to the United Kingdom and for use in business and tourism. Salaries for English teachers are also strong comparatively to other parts of the world, as Denmark has one of the highest known minimum wages.
